Foreigners who are offered a job in Turkey, have to apply for a work permit. There are different types of Turkish work permit that you can apply for:
Indefinite Work Permit
This work permit can be obtained by foreigners who:
- Hold a long term residence permit, or
- Have been working in Turkey for the past eight years.
Foreigners holding an indefinite work permit can enjoy rights of a Turkish citizen except for special laws. Furthermore, he/she is not obliged to vote, participate in elections, enter public office or perform military service.
Moreover, an indefinite work permit holder is not restricted to a specific geographical zone, employer or profession.
Definite Work Permit
A definite work permit allows foreigners to work in a specific profession, in a definite geographical zone, for a specific employer and for a specific period of time.
These work permits are usually valid for one year. Extensions can be granted, depending on the employer’s and Turkish government’s decision.
Independent Work Permit
A foreigner who works independently and has resided uninterruptedly for the past five years in Turkey, can apply for an independent work permit.
However, prior to granting this permit, the foreigner’s education, professional experience, contributions and investments to the Turkish economy are taken into consideration.
Turquoise Card was introduced by the Turkish government to bring in qualified labor to the country. Based on the foreigner’s educational level, professional experience, contributions to science and technology and its impact on the Turkish economy, the Turquoise card is granted.
Initially, Turquoise card is granted for three years, as a transition period. During the transition period, the Ministry of Labor evaluates and assesses the activities carried out by the foreigner. Based on the findings, the foreigner may be granted a permanent Turquoise card.
As a Turquoise card holder, you will enjoy all rights of a Turkish citizen. After five years, you be eligible to apply for a Turkish Citizenship. The spouse and children of the Turquoise card holder are granted a certificate, which can be used as a residence permit.
How to Apply?
A Turkish work permit or work visa can be obtained in two ways.
Apply for a Work Permit from Abroad
Foreigners can apply for a Turkish work permit from their country by visiting Turkish consulate. Turkish employers will need to submit an online application within six days of the foreigner’s application to the consulate. This application should be made with all the required documents from both sides i.e. the employee and the employer.
Once your application is approved by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, you must make arrangements to reach Turkey and report your arrival within 30 days.
Apply for a Work Permit from Within Turkey
If you’re living in Turkey, you can apply for a Turkish work permit if you hold a Turkish residence permit. However, what you need to make sure is that your residence permit is valid for at least six months from the date of application. If you have an educational residence permit, you are NOT eligible to apply for a work permit.
When applying for a work permit from Turkey, you and your employer need to submit an online application to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. The application must accompany the required documents. Once initiated, you will have six days to complete and submit the online application.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Security will carefully examine the application and will inform the applicant of the outcome.
Once a work permit is granted, the applicant will have 30 days to apply for his residence permit.
Remember, work permits in Turkey are issued only when you have a confirmed job offer. If you do not have a job offer and want to look for a job, you should apply for a short-term residence permit.
